Truly beautiful maps are hard to find. This is partly because designing maps is not a trivial task. Finding and matching beautiful colors is only one part of the job, since saturation and contrast can be a tricky thing when it comes to a web map. Not all colors and color combinations look great when used for a map.
Ethan Schoonover's "Solarized" theme is a splendid color scheme for graphical user interfaces, so we were interested in finding out how it could be used for map design. We used the Mapbox Editor to create a map style based on the Solarized background and content colors. We found that magenta and red work best as an accent color. The result is a minimalist, yet crisp web map.
